Alejandro Valverde Gets Banned for Doping
Spanish cyclist Alejandro Valverde received a two year ban on Monday for doping. He was suspected of doping revealed in 2006. Thirty year old Valverde cannot compete until 2012. He was allowed to keep his 2009 Spanish Vuelta Victory.
The message for cyclists is that at any time you get involved in a doping program it will come back to haunt you. The court of Arbitration for sport ruled in favor of the international cycling union and world anti-doping agency. Alejandro Valverde plants to appeal the verdict.
CAS says in a panel of three arbitrators voted 2-1 that Valverde broke anti-doping rules fours ago. Valverde will be disqualified this season and asked to reimburse his prize money.
Valverde argued that Spanish law protected him from anti-doping authorities using evidence gathered in Puerto Rico to sanction him. In the end Valverde was this first top Spanish rider to be punished.
